QUANTIY = PACK OF 10
Significance of Black Sesame or Kala Til : Black sesame seeds are believed to have the powers to absorb negative energies that are present both in the atmosphere and inside the body. Therefore, black sesame seeds are used for cleansing the surroundings during Pitru Paksha, which is deemed to be an inauspicious period. Hence, no auspicious ceremonies like Griha Pravesh, marriages, child's mundan or any other functions take place during Pitru Paksha. Moreover, people also do not indulge in products of comfort or luxuries during this phase of the year.
By using the kala til or black sesame seeds, people invoke their dead ancestors who wander in the Pitru Loka, a zone between earth and heaven. People offer black sesame seeds with water to the Pitrus while chanting specific mantras. According to the priests, these mantras (sounds) have certain energies that, in turn, activate the black sesame seeds to start attracting the dead relatives to earth for accepting the Pind Daan.
The ritual is done to relieve the ancestors from the vicious cycle of birth and death and also help them in getting liberated from worldly desires that keep troubling their souls. Moreover, a person, who has Pitru Dosha (the curse of his ancestors) in his horoscope, must perform the Shradh and Tarpan whole-heartedly and ask for forgiveness from the dead, who he may have displeased.
Offerings to Bhagwan Shiva : As a part of the pooja offered to Lord Shiva on a pradosha, the archana is done using 'tilakshata' — black sesame seeds mixed with uncoloured (white) rice grains. A specific set of names have to be chanted while doing this.

It is said that from this day itself, the weather starts shifting and becomes warmer day by day. Sesame seeds are said to be closely associated with this day and for the same reason, the festival is also known as Til Sankranti. The main reason for its significance with this day is that sesame seeds are said to be blessed by Lord Yama or the God of Death and this is why they are known as the ‘seeds of immortality’. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, it is advised that one should give away black sesame seeds in the temples to ward off the ill effects of Saturn or Rahu. Also, one should consume Til Ke Laddoo, which is made with jaggery and white sesame seeds. In Maharashtra, people distribute and exchange these laddoos with the saying that “Forget the past and say sweet words” like a renewal of friendship.
