Namah Shivay means "Salutations to Lord Shiva" or "Salutations to the auspicious one!" Is.

Siddha Shaiva and Shaiva Siddhanta traditions, which are part of the Shaiva sect, consider Namah Shivay to represent the Pancha Tatva realization of Lord Shiva and his universal unity over the five elements:

The "Na" sound represents the earth.
“Mah” sound represents water
The “Shi” sound represents fire.
The “Va” sound represents the pranic air.
The “ya” sound represents the sky
Its overall meaning is that “the universal consciousness is one”.

In the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition these five letters also represent the following:

"Na" represents God's power to keep secret (Tirodhana Shakti)
"Mah" represents the world
"Shi" represents Shiva
“Va” represents His revealing power (grace power)
“Y” represents soul

Traditionally it is repeated 108 times on the Rudraksha rosary. This is called Japa Yoga. Anyone can sing or chant it, but the effect of this mantra increases after initiation by the Guru.
